In furtherance of our efforts to recruit and retain people of diverse backgrounds, we are pleased to offer the Shumaker Undergraduate Diversity Science Scholarship. The Shumaker Undergraduate Diversity Science Scholarship is another example of how we seek candidates who demonstrate personal and professional excellence, and who bring diverse life experiences to our team.
The Shumaker Undergraduate Diversity Science Scholarship program provides a $5,000 scholarship to one (1) or two (2) outstanding undergraduate juniors or post-graduate students who are selected to participate in the firm’s Patent Agent Internship program. The scholarship is in addition to the salary paid to the student for the Patent Agent Internship program, and is awarded to assist in offsetting school expenses. The scholarship is awarded at Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP’s discretion.
The Shumaker Undergraduate Diversity Science Scholarship is available to students who are members of underrepresented or minority groups. Applicants must have outstanding undergraduate academic credentials, demonstrated leadership abilities, and community involvement. Applicants must also demonstrate a commitment to be enrolled in one of the degree programs listed on the requirements page and intend to live in the geographic area of one of our firm’s offices after graduating.
Eligibility for the Shumaker Undergraduate Diversity Science Scholarship requires that the recipient participate in and complete the firm’s Patent Agent Internship program following the recipient’s third year of undergraduate school or post-graduate studies, for a minimum of eight weeks. The scholarship will be paid upon the student’s completion of the firm’s Patent Agent Internship program and interns will be eligible for consideration of full time employment following graduation.
Shumaker's Patent Agent Intern's will:
- be paired with a mentor.
- be part of a larger summer program that also includes law school interns and team excursions.
Students who are interested in applying for the Shumaker Undergraduate Diversity Science Scholarship must be enrolled in one of the degree programs outlined below and submit the following documents:
- A completed application form attaching a current school transcript.
- A current resume, including a description of the applicant’s academic and leadership skills, community involvement, and personal and professional accomplishments.
- A technical writing sample.
- Letters of recommendation from two academic or professional references.
- Undergraduate Diversity Science Scholarship Essay.

Please note that if you are awarded a scholarship from Shumaker as part of your participation in a summer patent agent internship or summer associate program, you are not eligible to receive an additional scholarship should you participate in the program again the following year. For example, if you are awarded a 1L diversity scholarship as a summer associate, you would not be eligible to receive a 2L diversity scholarship the next summer.
