Mechelle Zarou Recognized by Ohio State Bar Foundation for Community Service

TOLEDO, OH – Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP is pleased to announce that Mechelle Zarou, partner in the Toledo office, was presented with the Ohio State Bar Foundation’s Community Service Award for District 4 for her outstanding service to the community.  Ms. Zarou is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association, District 4, which encompasses Lucas, Ottawa and Sandusky counties.

The Community Service Award recognizes attorneys aged 40 or younger who contribute substantial time and effort to a local social service or a local civic, artistic or cultural organization.  The service must be outside the recipient’s practice of law and must be given without compensation.  Recipients should represent the ideals of the legal profession, be a credit to the profession and enjoy a fine professional reputation.

The Ohio State Bar Foundation is a 501(c)3 public charity that works to advance the law and build a better justice system.  Through grants and programs, they educate and perform outreach to the public to make the law fair for all Ohioans.

Ms. Zarou is a partner in the labor and employment practice group. Her practice encompasses all areas of labor and employment law, including wrongful discharge, discrimination, workers’ compensation, unemployment compensation, business immigration, labor negotiations and arbitrations, and unfair labor practice charges.

Ms. Zarou is also a recipient of the 2008 Trustees Award presented by the Toledo Bar Association and is a 20 Under 40 Leadership Award recipient.  Ms. Zarou is listed in The Best Lawyers in America® and has been recognized as an Ohio Rising Star by Super Lawyers® magazine.

Ms. Zarou is very active in the community.  She is a member of the Toledo Bar Association, the Toledo Women’s Bar Association, and the Ohio State and American Bar Associations.  She is also a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.  Ms. Zarou currently serves on the Board of the Toledo School for the Arts, and is a member of its Personnel Committee. She is Co-Chair of the Long Range Planning Committee for the Toledo Bar Association, serves as Co-President of the Executive Committee of the Junior Bar Association, and is Chair of the Steering Committee for the Toledo legal community’s biennial Habitat For Humanity build, which has provided three houses for deserving families over the past six years.

Ms. Zarou received her J.D. and M.A. from Duke University and her B.A., with honors, from the University of Michigan.
