David J. Coyle Recipient of "Distinguished Service Award"

TOLEDO, OH – Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP is pleased to announce that David J. Coyle, a partner in the Toledo, Ohio office, was the recipient of the “Distinguished Service Award” at the 2013 Access to Justice Awards Dinner held on April 30, 2013.

Mr. Coyle was presented with this award for his commitment to the mission and work of legal aid in northwest Ohio.  He is an ardent supporter of equal access to justice.  Mr. Coyle has demonstrated a long-term commitment to legal services and has worked with Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (“ABLE”), Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. (“LAWO”), Toledo Legal Aid Society (“TLAS”), and the Toledo Bar Association Pro Bono Legal Services Program, to ensure access to justice for the poor in northwest Ohio.   He recently completed a two year term as President of the ABLE and LAWO Boards and he has previously served as President of the TLAS Board.

The purpose of the Access to Justice Awards Dinner is to celebrate the great work of legal aid and pro bono programs in the Northwest Ohio community; to increase critical financial support for legal services to the poor; to recognize individuals and organizations for their extraordinary service in the public interest; and, to hear from a prominent national leader on the importance of equal access to justice in our society.

Mr. Coyle is a partner in Shumaker’s litigation practice group.  He has extensive experience in bankruptcy, commercial litigation, commercial foreclosures, replevin actions and condemnation proceedings.

Mr. Coyle has been a member of the LAWO and ABLE Boards of Trustees since 2000, and a member of the TLAS Board since 1992.  Mr. Coyle is also a long-time volunteer with the TBA Pro Bono Legal Services Program.  Mr. Coyle has been recognized five times with service awards from the TBA for cumulative hours devoted to pro bono service of clients, and he regularly accepts pro bono defense of residential foreclosure cases from the Office of the Lucas County Foreclosure Magistrate.

Mr. Coyle has also been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America®.   Mr. Coyle is a member of the Toledo and Ohio State Bar Associations, as well as the American Bankruptcy Institute. 

Mr. Coyle received his J.D. from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and his B.S. from Ball State University.
