Sarasota, Fla. – Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP attorneys raised $2,640 for two local charities with a Halloween auction that has become an annual tradition at the Sarasota law firm. “The partners put themselves up for auction,” said Meghan Serrano, co-chair of Leadership Shumaker, the fundraising arm of the law firm. “The winning bidders get to choose what the partner has to dress up as for Halloween. It’s become an event everyone looks forward to year round,” said Serrano.
On Halloween Day, the firm awards winners for most humorous, most original, best sport and best theme. This year, the 11th Floor litigation team won best theme, dressed as 1980’s rock stars from the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards.
The funds from the Halloween auction are added to additional donations collected from Shumaker employees year-round with other events like paid for casual dress down Fridays, a March madness pool and others. “It’s just a great way to not only bring a little fun into the office, but also give back to this community, which is very important to us,” said Ben Hanan, managing partner of the Sarasota office.
Each year the goal is to raise a total of $4,000 to be divided equally between two local organizations; this year it will go to SPARCC and the Boys and Girls Club of Sarasota County.
This year, the firm is also running a donation drive through the end of November to collect food for All Faith’s Food Bank, supplies for SPARCC, and toys for the Boys & Girls Club. The money and supplies will all be presented to the organizations in early December.
“We really ramp up our donation efforts during the holidays but we are in touch with these organizations year round; our goal is to continuously help them meet their needs,” said Serrano.
