TOLEDO, OH — After nearly a decade as in-house counsel, Mara J. Rendina has rejoined Shumaker as a Partner, and in recognition of her deep industry experience, she has also been named the Regional Service Line Leader for Health Law, further enhancing Shumaker’s capabilities in the ever-evolving health care sector. A highly respected health care attorney, Mara has over a decade of experience advising hospitals, health care facilities, and medical professionals.

Mara has worked with a diverse array of clients, from large academic medical centers and research institutions to community hospitals, federally qualified health centers, and multi-specialty physician groups. She provides strategic counsel on licensing and accreditation, health care transactions, nonprofit governance, hospital operations, and regulatory compliance. Her extensive experience spans key federal and state regulations, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Anti-Kickback Statute, and the Stark Law. She also brings significant experience in telehealth, scope of practice, academic research, medical staff governance, involuntary admissions, and emergency medical treatment laws (EMTALA).
Before rejoining Shumaker, Mara served as in-house counsel at ProMedica Health System for over nine years, where she led the legal enterprise for its hospital and provider division. Most recently, she was in-house counsel for the University of Michigan Health System, advising on legal matters related to both the Ann Arbor campus and the system’s expansion to Sparrow Health System in Lansing.
Recognized as a leader in the field, Mara’s appointment as the Regional Service Line Leader for Health Law reflects her ability to translate complex legal and regulatory issues into clear, actionable guidance.
