As a nurse paralegal for the Medical Malpractice (med mal) team in the Charlotte office of Shumaker, Carmen assists the attorneys on the med mal team by organizing, and analyzing the many medical records that help constitute the medical malpractice cases that they defend. She was attracted to being a nurse paralegal because of the uniqueness of the job, as it allows her to use the information and experience she gathered as a registered nurse on a very busy cardiac telemetry unit and apply it in a completely different way. Many of the patients Carmen worked with, share a commonality with the clients she now works with in med mal. She finds each matter very interesting and fairly complex, which gives her the opportunity to continue to learn.
Carmen is board certified in Cardiac-Vascular Nursing and is certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
Away from work she enjoys music, film, trivia, short stories, current events, and crossword puzzles. She also enjoys going out to eat and being outside when the weather is nice. Most of all, Carmen enjoys spending time with her close friends and family, including her six-year-old son.
