Bennett H. Speyer Presents at 16th Annual Miami Law ESLS Entertainment & Sports Law Symposium

TOLEDO, OH – The law firm of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP is pleased to announce that Bennett H. Speyer was a panelist at the 16th Annual University of Miami Law ESLS Entertainment & Sports Law Symposium held on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, Florida.  The Symposium offers law students and professionals the opportunity to take part in a forum to discuss current legal issues in sports, entertainment, intellectual property, the arts, and the media.

As a participant in the Panel:  “NCAA Amateurism:  Compliance and the Evolution of the Collegiate Athletic Department”, Bennett discussed how head coaches’ employment contracts are impacted by the NCAA enforcement structure, including their increased accountability for compliance resulting from bylaw changes that become effective August 1, 2013.  In addition to reviewing common contractual provisions, Bennett described trends in contractual protections sought by coaches and universities in light of the rising financial stakes for the parties, coupled with heightened NCAA enforcement.

Bennett is a partner in the Toledo, Ohio office.  He is a member of the firm’s Tax and Employee Benefits Practice Group, focusing on the design and administration of qualified and non-qualified retirement plans, as well as executive compensation.  Bennett also leads the firm’s growing Sports & Entertainment Industry Group, and serves as legal counsel to elite level college coaches, professional coaches, athletic directors, conference commissioners, as well as industry executives.
