Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP Supports Open House for Veterans and their Families

Sarasota, Fla. — Just days before Veterans Day, dozens of veterans and their families will tour the facilities at the Roskamp Institute to learn about the organization’s cutting-edge research on traumatic brain injuries, Gulf War illnesses and posttraumatic stress disorder. The Sarasota office of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP is supporting the event by providing lunch for the 120 veterans and family members expected to attend the event, which begins at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7.

The Roskamp Institute was launched in 2003 and has quickly become a leader in studying neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and disorders that disproportionately affect American veterans. Roskamp has collaborated with the Tampa Veterans’ Hospital and the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center to study and treat traumatic brain injuries. The institute’s veterans’ Open House will include tours of its Manatee County campus, as well as research workshops on its many projects.

“Roskamp is a pioneer in the field of studying injuries that affect the brain, and their work is vital to understanding how combat affects our veterans when they return home,” says Shumaker Sarasota Managing Partner Benjamin R. Hanan. “More than 2 million American service members have deployed to either Afghanistan or Iraq since 2001, and they deserve the very best care we can provide. Roskamp is helping make sure that happens.”

According to the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center, statistics show that most service members complete their deployment without sustaining brain injuries, but it can be difficult to determine if service members and veterans need help. While deployed, they often deny symptoms of injury in order to complete their mission, and many do not realize they need help until they return home.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) also seriously affects veterans. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 11-20 out of every 100 veterans of the conflict in Iraq suffers from PTSD in a given year, and estimates suggest that 30 out of 100 Vietnam veterans have experienced PTSD at some point in their lives.

The Roskamp event is free and open to all veterans and their families. The institute is located at 2040 Whitfield Ave., Sarasota. For more information about the open house or to RSVP, call 941-752-2949 or email info@roskampinstitute.net.  To learn more about Roskamp, visit their website
