TAMPA, Fla. – Jonathan Ellis, an attorney at Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP, a full-service business law firm with offices in Tampa and Sarasota, recently received the prestigious Tikkun Olam Award from the Tampa Jewish Community Centers & Federation, a nonprofit with a mission to support and enrich the continuity of Jewish life and values in the Tampa community, in Israel and worldwide.
Ellis accepted the honor on Jan. 29 during the nonprofit’s Annual President's Dinner to celebrate the Jewish community, its growth and successes. Tikkun Olam, which means repairing the world, is an award given to one outstanding leader in the Jewish community each year. Recipients are bestowed with the award based on their demonstrated commitment and leadership to making the community and the world a better place.
“We consider the Tikkun Olam Award to be the most prestigious award given to the community,” said Rochelle Friedman Walk, the president of the Tampa Jewish Community Centers & Federation.
The event traditionally brings world leaders and national recognized speakers to address the community. This year, Ron Prosor, who served as Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, addressed the crowd of 600. Past distinguished speakers include U.S. Ambassador Dennis Ross; Former Prime Minister of Israel, Ehud Barak; General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.), former Secretary of State; Former Senator Bill Bradley; Dr. Charles Krauthammer, Pulitzer-prize winning syndicated columnist and commentator; The Honorable Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State and Distinguished American Diplomat; The Honorable Rudolph W. Giuliani, former New York City Mayor and TIME Magazine’s 2001 Person of the Year; Thomas Friedman, three-time Pulitzer-prize winning New York Times Foreign Affairs Columnist; David Brooks, commentator and author; and retired U.S. Special Operations Commander Admiral Eric T. Olson.
