Tampa Partner John Burgess will be presenting at the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FICPA) South Florida Accounting Conference on Friday, November 11, 2022. His presentation will cover the topic of whether or not an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) is right for your clients. Over 200,000 businesses in Florida are owned by those age 55 and older. Those owners will eventually exit their businesses and the question is how. John's session will describe the basics of an ESOP, which is a highly flexible exit strategy that could work for many of these owners. He will discuss the basics of how ESOPs are formed and how they work, the characteristics of a company that might be a good ESOP candidate, the tax advantages that are available for both owners who are selling and ESOP companies, and how employees can benefit from participating in an ESOP. Finally, we will go through an example of a typical ESOP transaction.
