Shumaker, Loop and Kendrick Attorney Rides in RAGBRAI with Judge May

  • August 04, 2014

TAMPA, Fla. – Suzette Marteny, a seasoned intellectual property (IP) attorney with Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP, a full-service business law firm with offices in Sarasota and Tampa, Fla., recently returned from riding in the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI).

The RAGBRAI is an annual seven-day bicycle ride that attracts participants from all 50 states and many foreign countries. In its 42nd year, RAGBRAI is the oldest, largest and longest bicycle-touring event in the world.

Dubbed team ‘Powered Descent,’ Marteny rode with Tampa Judge K. Rodney May; Jeff Staley; Lauren Staley, son-in-law and daughter of Judge May; Christine Horvath, director of finance at Miraval Arizona in Tucson; retired Tampa attorney Bill Weller; and Norman Inkpen, retired founder of a title company. The team’s jersey was designed by Lisa May, a NASA engineer and the sister of Judge May.

“Riding over 400 miles in RAGBRAI was a life-changing experience that I would not have otherwise had without Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick’s commitment to being an American Heart Association Fit-Friendly company,” Marteny said. “As a new addition to the team, I appreciated that the firm takes health and fitness seriously.”

Beginning in 1973, the RAGBRAI route averages 468 miles and is not necessarily flat. It begins along Iowa’s western border on the Missouri River and ends along the eastern border on the Mississippi River.

Marteny’s specialties include assisting companies and individuals in obtaining, leveraging and litigating patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. Her extensive experience assisting clients in acquiring, asserting and leveraging intellectual property assets in a variety of industries complements the solid IP team already in place at Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick.
