Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick Accepting Diversity Scholarship Applications

TAMPA, Fla. — The full-service business law firm Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP is accepting applications for the Shumaker Diversity Scholarship, a $7,500 scholarship to two first-year law students who are enrolled at an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school.

Eligibility for the Shumaker Diversity Scholarship requires that the recipient participate in and complete the firm’s summer associate program following the first or second year of law school. The scholarship will be paid upon the student’s completion of the firm’s summer associate program, in any of the firm’s five locations.

The Shumaker Diversity Scholarship is available to students who are members of minority groups. Applicants must have outstanding undergraduate and law school academic credentials, exhibit leadership abilities and community involvement and demonstrate a commitment to practice law after graduation in the geographic area of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick’s offices. Those locations include Sarasota and Tampa, Fla., Toledo and Columbus, Ohio and Charlotte, N.C.

“This scholarship is one example of how Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick seeks candidates who demonstrate personal and professional excellence and who bring diverse life experiences to our team,” said real estate attorney C. Graham Carothers, Jr., a partner and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee co-chair. “We are very excited about this new program and are confident that it will result in an even stronger, better and more effective team of professionals at Shumaker.”

Students who are interested in applying for the Shumaker Scholarship must submit a completed application form along with additional requirements, including current law school transcript and resume, legal writing sample, letters of recommendations and a description of why the student believes that diversity is important.

“Diversity is extremely important to Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick and to our clients,” said the Diversity and Inclusion Committee co-chair Sharon M. Fulop, a partner and real estate attorney at the full-service firm. “Keeping with our commitment to this initiative, we wanted to take the next logical step in recruiting underrepresented law students. With this scholarship, we provide funds to help offset the cost of law school as well as a position in our firm’s summer associate class. It’s a win-win opportunity for everyone.”

The deadline for applications is January 13, 2017 for first-year law students. Applications should be sent to Linda B. Vandercook at lvandercook@shumaker.com and Graham Carothers at gcarothers@shumaker.com.

Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion among its attorneys and other professionals, and believe that including attorneys and staff members from diverse backgrounds is a critically important element in providing quality legal services to clients and a productive working environment for team members.
