SARASOTA, Fla. — Real estate law attorney Juan Villaveces from the full-service business law firm Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP has been named a new board member at SunCoast Blood Bank, a nonprofit, independent community blood bank that serves hospitals and health centers in need in southwest Florida.
Villaveces will serve a three-year term on the board and has already joined the board’s finance committee.
“Juan is a great advocate,” said SunCoast Blood Bank Chief Executive Officer Scott Bush. “He will help us get the word out in addition to helping us in the legal realm.”
His involvement with SunCoast Blood Bank goes back over 20 years. He first donated blood to the organization in 1996 when he was 23. Since then, he’s donated 36 times, which have amounted to 47 units, just one pint shy of the six-gallon mark.
“The five-gallon milestone is admirable and it’s not achieved very often,” Bush said. “Anything past that and you get into rarified air.”
Villaveces started donating blood when he was attending Riverview High School in Sarasota. He continued donating during college and law school at Florida State University and after graduation.
“Donating blood is just something I’ve been doing since I was young because I wanted to do my part,” Villaveces said. “It helps people directly and makes a difference in their lives. Rather than waiting for a blood shortage, give now. It’s a great, easy way to give back to the community.”
