TOLEDO, OH – The law firm of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP is pleased to announce that Katherine S. Decker was presented with the Community Service Award for Attorneys 40 & Under by the Ohio State Bar Foundation.
The award is presented to attorneys, 40 years of age or younger, who contribute substantial time and effort in service to a local social service or to a local civic, artistic or cultural organization. The service must be outside the recipients’ practice of law and given without compensation. Emphasis is placed on current service. Recipients represent the ideals of the legal profession and, by example, are a credit to the profession.
Kate was honored at the Ohio State Bar Association’s District 4 Annual Meeting on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at The Toledo Club.
Kate is very active in many organizations, including Women’s Initiative of United Way of Greater Toledo and the Toledo Advisory Board for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). In the spring of 2017, Kate participated as a team member on candidate Rebecca Shope’s LLS Man & Woman of the Year campaign and has been nominated to run for LLS Woman of the Year in 2018. She has served on the Ohio Women’s Bar Association Mentoring Circles Committee, the Ohio Women’s Bar Association Nomination Committee, the Women’s Initiative of United Way of Greater Toledo’s Board and as chair of its Imagination Library Committee, and The Toledo Zoo’s ZOOtoDO and Companies for Kids Committees.
At Shumaker, Kate serves as Co-Chair of Leadership Shumaker Toledo, which is the firm’s philanthropic arm. The program involves the firm’s attorneys and staff members in numerous civic and fund-raising events that benefit not-for-profit charitable and arts organizations in the Toledo area. Kate serves on the firm’s Diversity Committee and is a member of its Women’s Leadership Initiative affinity group.
Kate was a member of the Leadership Toledo Class of 2014, was selected for membership in The National Trial Lawyers 40 Under 40, and received the Ohio Association for Justice “Distinguished Service Award” in 2012. She is a member of the Ohio State and Toledo Bar Associations, and the Vanderbilt CORPS Program.
Kate received her J.D. from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and her B.A., magna cum laude, from Vanderbilt University.
