A tenacious attorney, Matthew is a member of Shumaker's Professional Liability team and focuses his practice on defending health care providers in malpractice lawsuits in North Carolina state and federal courts. He is dedicated to achieving favorable results for his clients that effectively resolve malpractice allegations while protecting professional reputations.
Prior to joining Shumaker, Matthew was a litigator in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and served the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as an Assistant District Attorney (ADA) at the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office. As an ADA, Matthew was responsible for prosecuting numerous kinds of matters, including drug trafficking, firearms, and armed robbery cases. Working as a prosecutor allowed Matthew to gain extensive trial experience and an appreciation for representing the interests of his local community. Following his time in the District Attorney's Office, Matthew worked as Philadelphia in-house counsel for a large national auto insurer, representing insureds through all stages of civil litigation.
Matthew earned his J.D. from the Michigan State College of Law, where he took part in the Animal and Natural Resource Law Review. He wrote extensively on topics ranging from legal issues related to conservation of Michigan's abundant natural resources to legal protections for domesticated farm animals.
Matthew is a member of the North Carolina and Mecklenburg County Bar Associations. Outside of the courtroom, he enjoys participating in local basketball and soccer pick-up leagues, working out, playing guitar, travelling, and cheering on his beloved Michigan State Spartans, South Florida Bulls, and Tampa Bay Lightning with friends.
