Shumaker Names Two Attorneys to Lead Fast-Growing Manufacturing Business Sector

TOLEDO, OH — As American manufacturers are increasingly bringing production back to the U.S., Shumaker is selecting two partners to lead its growing Manufacturing Business Sector.

Partner John Miller will serve as Manufacturing Business Sector Chair, and Partner Lucas Garber will become Co-Chair. John works in Shumaker’s Toledo, Ohio office, and Lucas works in Shumaker’s Charlotte, North Carolina office – two of the top states for manufacturing business.

“With global supply chain issues and international tensions, manufacturers are more motivated to open factories in America,” said John. “Manufacturers rely on us to find solutions to their most complex problems, and we work tirelessly to ensure they are successful in both the courtroom and the marketplace.”

“Manufacturers are faced with diverse challenges, including overseeing product design and protection, incorporating new technologies, managing supply chains, and expanding production and distribution. On top of that, businesses must carefully follow global regulations,” said Lucas. “Our team of attorneys thrives at helping clients navigate these dynamic opportunities.”

For nearly a century, Shumaker has advised manufacturers—including small-to medium-sized companies and multinational Fortune 500 and FSTE 1000 industrial corporations—to add value to stakeholders.

  • Manufacturing has seen the largest 15-month job gain in 15 years. Ohio’s Manufacturing Gross Development Product (GDP) registered nearly $117.9 billion in 2021, ranking as the #4 largest across all 50 states. Ohio’s largest manufacturing employer is Honda Motor Co. Ltd. with 14,100 estimated employees. Whirlpool Corp. ranked second with 11,079, and Proctor & Gamble Co. third with 11,000.
  • The Charlotte region led North Carolina in manufacturing job growth over the last five years, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Between 2010 and 2015, manufacturing sector jobs grew at an annual rate of 2.5 percent in the Charlotte region, while the U.S. grew at 1.2 percent.

“Shumaker’s newly-formed business sector teams are strategically focused on areas of demand and growth in our economy,” said Shumaker Management Committee Vice Chair Jennifer Compton. “By promoting our top-performing lawyers, like John and Lucas, to these leadership positions, we have full confidence that our firm will continue to excel and drive continued success.”
