Michael E. Born

Partner

A member of the Environmental & Energy Service Line, Mike has over 30 years of experience as counselor and advocate for energy companies, manufacturers, and mining companies. Mike has participated in and represented clients through regulatory development and enforcement trends throughout multiple administrations at both state and federal levels.

Mike's environmental and energy experience includes:

  • Air matters: New Source and Title V permitting, compliance and related appeals, State Implementation Plan (SIP) developments and related litigation at the state and federal levels, air toxics and Hazardous Air Pollutant (HAP) compliance, and defense of multiple state and federal enforcement actions
  • Waste matters: Solid and hazardous waste permitting, regulatory development, groundwater compliance issues, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) closures, solid waste and coal combustion residuals (CCR) compliance, and corrective action orders
  • Surface water matters: National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and installation permits, water quality standards (WQS) developments, and wetland and dredging permits
  • Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and state enforcement matters

Though Mike has spent his entire career representing the industry in regulatory matters, he is himself an avid outdoorsman and a mindful conservationist. After 20 years in the suburbs and commuting 9,000 cumulative miles to and from work, Mike recently moved to a modern, energy-efficient loft in the heart of Columbus' urban core. He now walks or rides public transit to work, no longer spreads gallons of fertilizer on his lawn, and heats and cools a home a fraction of the size of his prior suburban McMansion. All of this has led to cutting his carbon footprint in half. Mike's only long drives now consist of weekend travel to his outside interests, which include sporting clays and golf.
