Mike Suver

Director of Government Affairs

Mike Suver brings decades of public policy and government relations experience to his role as Director of Government Affairs at Shumaker Advisors. In this capacity, Mike is responsible for streamlining processes, facilitating communication between clients and member institutions, and managing organizational resources to their mission.

Prior to joining the firm, Mike served as Vice President of Operations for the Inter-University Council of Ohio (IUC), where he played a pivotal role in advancing strategic initiatives that support Ohio's public universities.

Mike was with IUC for more than 18 years, previously serving as Vice President of Government Relations before transitioning into an operational leadership role. During his tenure, he led statewide advocacy efforts, legislative analysis, and strategic communications to support and shape higher education policy in Ohio. In his role as Vice President of Operations, Mike supported the IUC President and the Presidents' Council by developing and executing organizational goals, managing cross-institutional initiatives, and representing the Council on statewide committees. He was known for identifying policy challenges, building coalitions, and advancing collaborative solutions in partnership with the Ohio Department of Higher Education and other key stakeholders.

Earlier in his career, Mike served as Chief of Staff to Ohio Lieutenant Governor Bruce Johnson and as Deputy Director of Legislative Affairs at the Ohio Department of Development, where he managed legislative strategies and worked closely with the General Assembly to support economic growth initiatives. He also held leadership positions at the Ohio Air Quality Development Authority and the Ohio Manufacturers' Association, where he focused on energy and environmental policy.

Mike began his public service career in the Ohio Senate, working in the offices of Senate President Stanley Aronoff, Senate President Pro Tempore Bruce Johnson, and Senator Merle Kearns. His deep understanding of state government, collaborative leadership style, and long-standing relationships at every level of Ohio public policy make him a trusted advisor and highly effective advocate.
