Michael J. Class

Associate

Michael is a member of the Litigation and Disputes Service Line, where he focuses on insurance recovery. He regularly assists policyholders in complex recovery efforts under property, commercial liability, and business interruption policies among others, from the inception of the claim through the final settlement.

Prior to joining Shumaker, Michael worked at a law firm as part of an Insurance Recovery Practice Group to compel insurers to honor their coverage obligations.

In addition, Michael has experience assisting both businesses and individuals in a variety of different contractual disputes, including employment contracts, residential construction, landlord/tenant agreements, and non-compete and non-solicitation agreements. He has assisted in litigating these and other matters from intake through appeal in both state and federal courts, as well as various alternative-dispute forums.

While attending The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, Michael worked as a Civil Division Clerk for the Columbus City Attorney, Zach Klein. In addition, he was the Staff Editor for the Ohio State Journal of Criminal Law and was a Moot Court competition participant who qualified for the Texas Young Lawyers Association National Championship. During law school, Michael volunteered his time as a mock trial coach for The Ohio University undergraduate team. Upon graduation, Michael was named a member of The Order of the Barristers for demonstrating exceptional skill in trial advocacy.

Prior to law school, Michael graduated magna cum laude and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and Psychology from The Ohio State University, where he also minored in Economics. He was a Captain and Vice President of the mock trial team and received the All-American Award. During this time, he was a Policy Page for the Ohio House of Representatives.

Dedicated to helping others in the study of law, Michael serves as a consultant for The Ohio State University mock trial team and is an assistant coach of the Jackson High School mock trial team.

In his free time, Michael enjoys spending time with his wife, Hannah, and the rest of his family as well as playing in his local volleyball league, drawing, and helping out with his father’s construction business.
