Patrick is a registered patent attorney and Certified Licensing Professional with more than 15 years of legal experience. He has an electrical engineering degree with power meter industry experience and technical acumen in electronics, computer software and business methods, telecommunications, medical devices, and mechanical arts. In helping clients build their international patent portfolios, Patrick leverages patent examiner histories and art unit analytics to maximize patent quality and to minimize cost and time-to-issuance. Patrick is one of only 20 Certified Licensing Professionals in the Carolinas and approximately 900 worldwide.
Patrick's intellectual property practice includes legal investigations such as infringement and risk mitigation searches, validity analyses, and freedom-to-operate investigations. He has procured more than 100 U.S. patents and also counsels clients with regard to trademark selection, protection, policing and opposition. In addition to serving clients, Patrick regularly speaks to industry groups on emerging technologies and related legal implications.
He has worked with clients in advancing technologies such as:
- Augmented reality, artificial intelligence, blockchain implementations, and network security
- Range-of-motion medical devices, telecommunication protocols, multimedia delivery for customer experiences, and custom furniture manufacturing control systems
- A wide variety of license, procurement, purchase, maintenance, software, IT, Software as a Service (SaaS), cloud storage, and other agreements
Patrick has a long history of community service for chambers of commerce, bar organizations, and start-up incubators. He served on the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement of the Central Carolinas, which aspires to correct Charlotte's crisis of low upward socio-economic mobility. Patrick has three kids and a wonderful wife who shares his passion for Clemson University, where they met.
