James D. O'Donnell

James is a member of Shumaker’s litigation team. He focuses his practice on business and real estate litigation and regularly represents businesses, business owners, landlords, and property owners in all phases of litigation in state and federal court. An intellectually creative and driven attorney, James’s litigation practice spans multiple industries, including manufacturing, construction, health care, real estate, hospitality, retail, and technology. He is passionate about understanding his clients’ unique circumstances and enjoys guiding them through challenging times.

Before joining Shumaker, James practiced law in the Pacific Northwest, where he handled complex environmental and business litigation matters. James has extensive experience representing clients in breach of contract, fraud, defamation, unfair competition, and other business disputes. In addition, he has represented businesses and property owners in a broad range of environmental matters, including hazardous waste cleanups and government enforcement actions.

After law school, James spent two years serving as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Joel DeVore of the Oregon Court of Appeals, where he researched and drafted judicial opinions in diverse areas of law.

A Sarasota native, James enjoys living, working, and volunteering in the community. James currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Sarasota Community Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast. He also enjoys spending time with his Rhodesian Ridgeback, running, weightlifting, fishing, boating, and playing golf.

James is admitted to practice to law in Florida, Oregon, and Washington.
